Lissa

“The blinds, Melsi? Seriously? You need to get out more.”

I looked up from where I was scrubbing the living room blinds in our bathroom tub. “I’m just making sure everything is sparkling for Christmas.”

Joshua shook his head. “That’s what lights and tinsel are for,” he snorted. “You need to get a life, Sis. Just sayin’.” He rolled his eyes as he left the room.

I snorted. Everyone craved weekends off, and usually, I fell into that category, also. But ever since Thanksgiving dinner, I did anything to keep busy. I worked twelve-hour shifts on Friday and Saturday, then came home and scrubbed and cleaned our small house until I fell into bed exhausted. Even then, I struggled to sleep, and when I finally did, they were filled with tormenting dreams that left me waking up in tears. Dreams like seeing Chris and Tanya ride off in a convertible into the sunset while I stood watching. Others were more cryptic but didn’t take a psychology degree to figure out, like the one where I was lost in the woods and couldn’t find my way home. I could hear Chris calling me, but I couldn’t see him. Despite my internal pep talk to move on, I felt lost.

I wanted to hate Tanya, but I couldn’t. She appeared to be a nice person who fit in well with Chris’s friends and family. Any thoughts I had that Chris might still harbor some feelings for me were shot when I walked in on him kissing her. The night had only been made bearable thanks to John, but after that moment, I made my excuses and went home. I felt like Chris and I had just broken up, which was ridiculous since we hadn’t been together for a couple of years. And even though I knew he had someone else, or lots of someone elses over the months, I subconsciously still considered him mine. So witnessing first-hand that he wasn’t, still came as a blow. Knowing he was holding her close, giving her soft, melt-your-heart kisses that quickly turned into melt-your-panties sex hurt worse than I could describe.

Now I found myself with a Sunday off, and I didn’t know what to do with myself. I tried to go shopping earlier, but frankly, I just wasn’t in the Christmas spirit or the mood to handle hoards of shoppers. After driving around in the parking lot for five minutes unable to find a parking place, and getting cut off more than once by people who obviously weren’t feeling the spirit of generosity, I decided to head home and take out my frustrations on the blinds.

Sad. Totally and completely pathetic.

Other girls my age would be planning parties or going out with friends, putting up decorations - something fun. But work was what I knew better. Most of my life, my mom was always busy working, and after she died, I took over all the household chores since my stepfather was usually too lazy to get off his ass – or too drunk.
